Mission: The Return
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: March 1, 2397

Sickbay had finally started to return to normal, and many of the casualties and injured had been transferred to the hospital ships. The once chaotic atmosphere was now replaced with relative calm and a sense of control once again.

Taiga entered sickbay and looked around. A few engineers were working on some of the damaged systems in one of the rooms corners. Medical staff were attending to the final patients. Gone was the triage, the cries of pain, the smell of blood and the looming threat of death.

"Captain..." Nurse Miyafuji said as she hurried upto her. "Is everything alright? Is there something wrong?" she asked a sense of panic in her voice. With Taiga now being in the last stages of her pregnancy it seemed that everyone was on edge.

"I'm perfectly fine, as is the baby. Still cooking away. I'm just doing a house call. I gather Doctor Hinamori is in one of the private rooms?" Taiga asked.

Miyafuji let out a sigh of relief. "Yeah, she's in room twelve."

Taiga smiled. "Thanks. Just wanted to say hello, and meet our newest crewmember."

With that said Taiga made her way over to room twelve. She hesitated for a moment before stepping through the door. The room was brightly lit. Amu was sat up on the biobed a PADD in her hand. Next to her the incubator held the small baby, whom was sleeping soundly.

"Captain..." Amu said as she looked up from her PADD.

"Don't mind if I drop in do you Amu?" Taiga asked.

Amu smiled. "Not at all. Come on in."

This was Amu's space, and it felt almost wrong to be intruding upon it. She made her way over to Amu's bedside and positioned herself on one of the stool. "How are you doing?"

"Not bad. The birth went really well, even if we were under fire throughout it all." Amu smiled. "It was an interesting experience."

Taiga smiled. "One I will be having soon."

"Yeah, but its nothing to be worried about. Its perfectly natural. Are you nervous?" Amu asked.

Taiga nodded. "In all honesty, yes I am. I don't know what might happen. This is all new territory for me. Its not like the bridge of a starship. I know that I won't be in control over what happens. I think it scares me a little."

"Thats understandable." Amu replied softly. "I felt the same way. But I had faith in the medical staff here. Honestly, I was terrified when my waters broke. I had no idea if we were going to survive and if we even had the resources space. I feared that I'd have him, then lose him right away. Luckily that didn't happen, and I feel blessed to have him here." she looked over at the newborn.

Taiga followed her gaze to the incubator. "He's beautiful Amu." she said a smile naturally stretching across her face.

Amu swung her legs from under the covers and took a few steps over towards the incubator. "He's only in this for precaution. He was a little early, but its perfectly fine to take him out.m After all, I have started breast feeding him." she explained as she gently took the newborn boy out of the incubator.

She held him close, gently supporting his head nestled him in her arms. "He's my little miracle, my little man. I can't wait to see his fathers face once this war is over." She said softly. As she held him she walked around the biobed.

"Captain. No..." She paused. "Taiga. I want you to meet Tadase." she held him out to her with a warm smile.

Taiga gently took Tadase from Amu and held him in her arms. He felt so delicate, so small, so fragile yet he resembled so much more. That life was always being created and that no matter what came for them, they endured and could create something beautiful together. She cradled the baby in her arms as she looked down upon him as he slept.

"Hello Tadase. I'm Taiga. I'm the Captain of this ship. I'm the one who keeps everyone here safe. Including you." She whispered softly to the newborn. "Welcome aboard."

Amu smiled as Taiga held her son. He stirred and cooed slightly slowly waking. After a few seconds his eyes opened. They were hazel like Amu's beautiful and bright, full of light and innocence. He stared up at Taiga and seemed to smile, before his eyes fluttered shut again and he was back asleep.

"I think he got a good look at you Taiga," Amu said. "He wanted to say hello."

Taiga felt a warmth spread through her heart as tears ran down her face. "I never thought I'd feel this. But it feels..."

"It feels good..." Amu said. "To see such a miracle amongst all this death and destruction?"

Taiga nodded. She held Tadase out back to Amu whom took him back and delicately placed him back in his incubator.

"Don't worry Taiga. Everything will be alright. With myself, Talia and you having children all at the same time. These three will grow up together. They have friends right from the beginning." Amu smiled. "And your baby will be just as beautiful. After all, he/she is your own little miracle. Just like Tadase is mine."

"I couldn't agree with you more Amu. I hope that it all works out."

"I can promise you that everything will be fine Taiga. You've fought too hard for this. Everyone knows this, and they'll do their best to make sure its not just a special moment, but one that stays with you forever." Amu replied giving her a soft smile. "Let me let you in on a secret though..."

"Oh? A secret?" Taiga asked.

"Its not as painful as you may think. But once you get used to it, once he/she arrives. That pain turns into nothing but joy." Amu explained. "And you forget the pain instantly."

"I'll remember that. Thanks Amu."
